A Sad Accident

Yesterday afternoon Michael Welch, assistant foreman in

Sherman and William's Quarry at West Rutland, was killed.

He was at work near a block of marble, in which was an invisible seam,

and while his back was turned, a piece weighing about four tons split off and

falling upon him crushed the whole of his body below his head,

killing him instantly.  He was about 55 years old and has worked

for L. B. Smith, Foreman of the quarry, for over thirty years.

He was a brother-in-law of John Hines, of this

village and leaves a wife and four children.
